So as some of you now I had imported a Skyline. I was having issues with overheating that I couldn't figure out, thermostat was fine, water pump was fine, fan seemed ok, etc. Because I couldn't figure it out I brought it to a mechanic.
They claimed the fan sensor and fan clutch was the problem, they had taken everything off the car so they were going to charge me for that anyways (annoyed) and so I just told them I would order a new clutch and sensor.
The sensor was easy enough, the fan clutch though I couldn't get less for than like $600 and iwth insane time in delivery (2 weeks). He suggested that they would build me an electrical fan system for $700 that they put on a twin turbo G35, in my foolishness I said "that sounds like a good idea".
Sure enough when I get the car back I started to have insane issues, turning on the AC causes the car to shut off during a drive. Took me a long annoying while on a 30 minute turned hour long drive to figure that out. On furthe rinspection one of the headlights became intermittent, when the fans turns on the car would shut off like the AC. One fan was on with the AC, both being on made the car undrivable.
He claimed that my alternator was going bad. I had it tested and it was fine, however I bought a R33 GTR one which is more powerful and put that on. This did not resolve the issue. The alternator is not the problem at all.
So I brought the car back. They claimed they fixed it saying it has the wrong alternator pulley, later found out to be false. 1/3 of the way home car shuts off on the highway. They claimed by hicas is failing, the hicas is failing because the power is fucked. They claimed the car was missing. These cars are known to sound like that at idle.
So finally I brought the car back again, they said they would order a new fan clutch and not charge me any money for it or the install. I'm like "good". I bring the car in over night and leave. Next day they claim they are going to try to get the fans working before they do anything and i'm like "don't bother".
Lesson learned: I'm usually someone who works on my own car unless it's something I have no clue about. Always go with OEM parts and don't fuck around unless they need to be upgraded for a specific and CLEAR reason and don't listen to mechanics when the internet seems to be a far better resource.
Hopefully I get the car back soon. If it's still fucked i'm going to see red.
Anyone else have a similar disaster to share?

A mechanic was trying to charge me around 5k for a head gasket job on my '95 4Runner. After I laughed, he tried to lowball me $500 to buy it for his son. Their shop is closed now. Apparently I wasn't the first.

...yikes.
this is why for import such as skylines, i'd simply stick to the forums and tuner shops.
my worst experiance was trying to get brake bleed for my SV650. took it to the dealer to bleed brakes are a GSX-R swap
dealer: oh yea, we can do it
great, just the brakes, i'll be back in a week
week goes by. bikes hasnt even moved
me: why is my bike still there?
dealer: we refuse to touch it
me: WTF , i spoke to the head mechanic, he said hed take it
dealer: we refuse to touch it, too much has changed
nim-rods. if I have known that I wouldnt had bother taking the bike 25km from my house to bring it to you idiots.

I sent my Subaru in to get a check engine light diagnosed under warranty. Long story short I was misfiring and I couldn't figure out why. Sent it in and they ran compression/leak down and had "the entire block torn apart" for testing. Now, on the same phone call I was told my compression was 145psi across the board and leakdown was normal. Literally on the same call, talking with THE SAME PERSON I was told that I had no compression on cyl. 2 and cyl. 4 because my exhaust valves were burnt up. He tried to convince me that was even possible. I asked for them to politely put my car back together and return it to me. Turns out one spark plug was gapped incorrectly and they didn't catch that.

I'm still angry about paying $1900 for a new clutch. Apparently it needed a new slave and master cylinder and flywheel while they were at it, the latter of the two I don't buy for a second because they wouldn't show me anything that was "fucked" (their words). This was the only place in town that would do a payment plan and I just wanted my car back (plus I plan on keeping it forever so whatever was replaced was less to worry about in the future) so I just said fuck it. They also wanted to charge me $1300 to remove a bolt I broke off in the head. Apparently aluminum is this fancy high-end material that causes labor rates to be 10x what they normally are. Fuckwits.

Having a car not want to start for the sole reason that its to cold outside(diesel w123). Yes I realize I could have bought a block heater. Didn't make sense at the time since I knew I would be selling the car soon.

Some dipshit blew my ignition fuse by accidentally touching the metal contacts on the ignition switch to the steel steering column while it was still connected.
That dipshit was me.

Not my direct experience, but I used to work at a shop that hired a Russian immigrant as a mechanic. This was in the early 90's. That guy was the worst hack I'd ever seen. We thought we'd start him out on oil changes, how hard can that be, right? Soon learned that we had to keep Heli-Coils in stock for all the oil pans he stripped out. Soon he left to start his own used car lot, with his brother. I stopped in there one day and he showed me a V6 Camry they had up on the lift. Bought at auction, rod knocking.
Now you'd think a hack repair for that would be to put a new bearing shell in and maybe hit the journal with an emery cloth or something, right? Ha. This guy cut the rod in half with a torch, hose-clamped the bearing shell to the crank and siliconed the piston in the bore, then cut off the fuel injector lead. "Runs goot. Maybe leetle shake."

My father needed to replace the engine in his work truck. He had the dealer where he bought it do the job. When it came time for the new engine's first oil change, he found that the oil pan was flattened and couldn't get a wrench on the bolt. They must have stored his engine right on the floor with all the weight on the oil pan. Furthermore, he noticed everything on the front end was loose, the headlights, the bumper, etc as if nothing was ever tightened down. He brought it back to the same guys and they replaced the oil pan, tightened everything down, and even changed out heater hoses for him.
After all this, my father noticed he wasn't getting any oil pressure. It turned out the gasket goop they used to replace the oil pan somehow got into the oil pump and clogged it up.
That dealership has since gone out of business.

Had my GTP in for a water pump change. Took it to a dealer.
They did the WP job fine. When I got the car back and turned the key the dash lit up like the 4th of July. So I popped the hood, noticed that the dipshit tech hung the alternator by all the wires causing damage, and calmly drove it back around the building right into the first service bay. The techs and service writers didn't know what the hell to think until I threw the keys on the counter and told them that some fucking hack had damaged my electrical system and I want it repaired immediately. Yes, I will wait. No, it most certainly was not like that when it came in, and even if it was, what type of shitty service department wouldn't tell me that something was this far out of whack?
When all was said and done the car was fine, but that did not stop me from reporting the situation once I got home.

Yes, definitely if I have issues with the future i'm going to a tuner shop. The only thing is the local tuner shop that I know of isn't that great and I don't know of any others. I'll be looking around for one though.
I never had someone deny to work on any of my vehicles before but a place wouldn't work on my friend Cayman. Big O tires

Had a guy offer to do my subaru clutch for $400 if I helped him. WTF if I have to help I will just do it myself and pocket the money.
